UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM- PART 2 THESIS
My thesis considered the deployment of architecture in the Israel/ Palestine crisis; and the thresholds between the two people groups affected.
The study of the architectural conditions in Israel/ Palestine illuminates the extent to which the war has become embedded in Israeli and Palestinian society, now constituting the mundane everyday and drawing the fabric of the city into the battle. Narratives are manipulated, spaciocidal policies have created a highly fragmented territory, and the construction of the family home has become an act of spatial attack, all contributing towards a condition that renders prospects of peace ever more remote.
The architectural response to this research is a critique of this situation based in Hebron; a conflict narrative archive- a civic building to record, store, and broadcast narratives of conflict. It reads as one building externally, and is divided internally between the two people groups, tailoring the internal space to the nuances of the two cultures.
Architecture has become a narrative tool in Israel Palestine, creating the physical ‘facts’ on which to hang the narrative of Israel as the chosen people, or the persecution of Palestine. The political influence of architecture should not be underestimated, the planning committee, the refugee camp, the building site- these are the current battlegrounds of Israel/ Palestine- and their manipulation will dictate the possibilities open to the peacemakers who attempt to resolve this war.
